Into the Heart of the Himalayas: Kanchenjunga 2022
In the spring of 2022, a diverse team of mountaineers from across the globe embarked on a rare and ambitious journey — the GH-Kanchenjunga International Expedition, a bold attempt to summit the third-highest peak on Earth: Mt. Kanchenjunga (8,586m).
Unlike the more frequented trails of Everest or Annapurna, Kanchenjunga lies in Nepal’s far eastern wilderness, along the border of India and Tibet. Remote, raw, and majestic, the Kanchenjunga region is revered both for its stunning beauty and spiritual significance. The name itself means "The Five Treasures of the Snow," referring to its five massive summits that tower like icy gods above the clouds.
The Dream Takes Shape
Months of planning, training, and coordination came to life in April 2022. Led by GH Nepal’s experienced expedition team, our international climbers — hailing from Japan, France, the US, Nepal, and Germany — gathered in Kathmandu for final preparations. Gear was checked, permits secured, and a Buddhist puja ceremony was held to bless the expedition.
On April 7, the team flew east to Bhadrapur, then drove and trekked through lush lowland villages and rhododendron forests toward the base camp. The journey itself was an adventure — winding through Taplejung, Ghunsa, and Pangpema — offering glimpses of snow leopards, red pandas, and ancient Sherpa settlements.
Life at Base Camp
The team established Kanchenjunga Base Camp (5,140m) in mid-April. The air was thin, the temperatures unforgiving, but spirits were high. Acclimatization rotations began quickly — climbing to Camp I and back, testing oxygen levels, and fine-tuning gear.
Unlike Everest or Manaslu, Kanchenjunga sees fewer climbers each year, meaning more solitude — and more responsibility. Rope fixing was a joint effort. Weather windows were narrow. Every move required precision.
Summit Push
After weeks of conditioning and load carries, a clear forecast arrived in the third week of May. On May 20, 2022, our summit team — supported by GH Sherpa legends like Dawa Tenzing and Mingma Dorje — began their final push.
The route was brutal. The climb from Camp IV to the summit involved steep, exposed sections, deep snow, and high winds. But at 6:35 AM on May 22, after nearly 11 hours of relentless climbing, the team stood atop Kanchenjunga’s main summit, awash in the first golden light of dawn.
The moment was sacred. To the east, the sun broke over the horizon. To the west, Everest and Lhotse floated in the distance. Silence. Snow. Sky.
Back to Earth
Summiting is only half the journey. The descent was cautious but steady. By May 25, all members were safely back at base camp. There were tears, hugs, frostbitten fingers, and endless cups of tea.
This expedition was not only a physical achievement but a spiritual one — a testament to teamwork, respect for nature, and the enduring draw of the unknown.
Gratitude
We thank the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, our local porters, the GH logistics team, and every family member who held space for this expedition to happen. Most of all, we thank the mountain for allowing us safe passage.
Until Next Time…
The GH-Kanchenjunga International Expedition 2022 will remain one of our proudest undertakings — not just for the summit, but for the soul of the journey. Here's to more silent sunrises above the world.
